Moving at the Speed of Trust

Paint , Paint, Paint!

Baby Steps folks - literally!

As, the children get used to the Wonder Studio routine - Consistency and repetition are so so important in any learning environment… Also, seeing their classmates doing something that they wouldn’t have considered doing invites new ideas, risk-taking, and trust.

Trust that they are receiving those hands (from their own caregivers and others) -

Trust that they can wash up afterwards (as many times as they want) -

Trust that they are in a safe place where they can make mistakes!

How are we building trust in each moment at Wonder Studio?

From “In the Good Enough Studio” by Nina Orbach, Nina writes this:

“The experience of permission is as significant as the air we breathe in parenting, education, and therapy. It is often the space that enables the moments of deepest development and transformation to occur…

The feelings that flourish in the light of this acceptance are those of empowerment, hope, well-being, gentleness, empathy, and self-acceptance, while perfectionism and anxiety dwindle.

The studio is not so much a space for making beautiful things, although this often happens; its primary purpose is stimulating the permission and abilty to live creatively.”

We are constantly building, breaking, and hopefully repairing Trust with our children - with all of the people we meet.

One of my favorite books - The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey - Habit 5 - Seek first to understand, then to be understood.

Covey says - “A father once told me, “I can’t understand my kid. He just won’t listen to me at all.” “Let me restate what you just said,” I replied. “You don’t understand your son because he won’t listen to you?”

“That’s right,” he replied.

“Let me try again,” I said. “You don’t understand your son because he won’t listen to you?”

“That’s what I said,” he impatiently replied.

“I thought that to understand another person, you needed to listen to him,” I suggested.

“Oh!” he said. “Oh.”

The entire book is great but this chapter alone is worth the price of book or get it from the library!

Here are 2 parts from the chapter that have really impacted my life.

  1. Build Emotional Bank Accounts

    Listen with eyes and heart.

Focus - on receiving the deep communication of another human soul.

  2. The greatest need of a human being is to be understood, be affirmed, validated, appreciated.
